Chapman University Commemorative Poster

Life & Legacy

Oftentimes the story of a successful businessperson begins humbly. Maybe he began as a paperboy, or a store clerk, or simply tinkered inside his garage. Little does that person know that one day that simple garage would be the birthplace of a tech start-up that could change the world or that job as a paperboy would lead to an enduring career in business. The design of this poster is centered around this premise: that George Argyros’ own story reflects the journey that all business students take when they embark on their education at Chapman, a catalyst that takes them from humble beginnings into their futures.

A main focal point of the poster is the figure standing in a driveway. It symbolizes both George Argyros himself and the idea of the “everyman,” allowing the viewer to identify with the figure and place themselves in his shoes. He stands, book in hand and bag on his shoulder, leaving home for an important opportunity. He looks back at his garage office, symbolic of modern startups, and acknowledges his past hard work, knowing that his future is bright. In the water at his feet is his reflection, depicting his future as a successful businessperson. There, he looks out the large windows of his office at a city, filled with opportunity. Even though he has found the success he dreamed of, he will continue to reach for new heights.

Encapsulating this scene is the shape of the Chapman panther, which is symbolic not only of the university but of the drive, strength and daring needed to succeed in business. Above the panther’s head arches a quote from George Argyros himself, urging all business school students to dare to dream. This image also serves to show that for 20 years, the Argyros School of Business and Economics has been responsible for nurturing the goals and aspirations of hundreds of men and women. With Chapman’s guidance, one can go from humble beginnings to a corner office.
